Zeytinli Mosque

Urfa, Turkey 2019

The building was desired as a primative building thickness with the design of the vertical blocks which is located in a specific axis by sitting the roof on. The design language and attitude that we consider is only made out of this philosophy like the first mosques which are the lack of any aesthetic considerations. As well as an easily understandable, clear, consistent scale architectural solution, the aim is to create an original and qualified mass composition.

The project site is located at southeast anatolia region ‘harran-urfa’ where the hot climate is a rule and the texture which is created by single and combined buildings that is unique. The language of the created structure that has been made a thousand of years is a practical structured ritual in this geography. Generally from past to present we can see adobe and mud which are common local material as an finishing product at the Urfa and its close area. The massive grammatical language with its short span formed by the combination of plaster and earth color texture can be shown among the important characteristic elements of local architecture.

We try to interpret design decisions through awareness of the values and heritage history of architectural, cultural and archeological of the city and its near circle. We capture a lean architectural rhetoric that is sensitive to the geographical features, climate, ecology, social life of the city. We can present to the current use with a unique approach in contemporary conditions by revealing the stereotyped usage characteristics that exist in regional geography.
